Patent & Registered Design Attorney - Partner
I qualified as a U.K. Chartered and a European Patent Attorney in 2005, and have a Chemistry degree and a PhD in Surface Science from the University of Southampton.
After 3 years of hands-on innovation as a research scientist in BP's Research Laboratories, I worked for several years in the patent departments of petrochemical companies BP and INEOS. I then co-founded Compass Patents LLP, which merged with Mathisen and Macara in 2011.
I specialise in industrial chemical patents, particularly polymer production processes, and various other areas, from fishing equipment to solar energy collection.
I have considerable experience of PCT and European practice, especially in European Patent Office Opposition and Appeal proceedings; also substantial freedom-to-operate and validity work for European and UK patents, and have worked closely with non-European attorneys on 3rd party patents and applications in other jurisdictions, such as filing nullity suits in China. I maintain close relationships with my clients by understanding how their inventions will contribute to their business strategy, allowing me to give focused advice on whether patent applications can add value to the business, and how to maximise this.
