Meet the Team: Liz
As part of our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we’d like to introduce you to Senior Accounts Administrator, Liz Howells. With a 25 year career that’s spanned numerous industries, culminating in IP law, Liz is a core part of the accounts team – as well as the wider team.
Biography
Part AAT qualified, Liz operated within accounts teams in the shipping, retail and IT industries before she made her way to Mathisen & Macara.
Liz’s day-to-day role has her overseeing multiple admin functions within our firm, including all aspects of the purchase ledger, multi-currency payments, sales ledger, and forecasting. Liz is also the safe pair of hands that liaises with the company accountant on a monthly basis to ensure the finances are up to date and accurate.
A rewarding career
Administration within a firm that operates internationally, like Mathisen & Macara, presents many day-to-day challenges – and luckily this is part of the job that Liz enjoys most:
“I enjoy being challenged or being presented with a situation where I have to fill in the gaps to a degree. Problem solving and uncovering financial issues are the sort of situations I find rewarding. Within IP law, everyone works with such attention to detail, and my role is no different. I take pride in producing accurate work.”
“I also enjoy any opportunity I can to be proactive. A number of years ago I worked at an early-stage business which had limited systems in place. When I started, I set up new control systems in order to facilitate the day-to-day activities of the accounts department. The first system was one which cleared the back log of transaction work which had built up due to the speed the company had grown at. Looking back on projects like that where I took the initiative to improve an existing process are amongst the proudest of my career.”
“If I had one piece of advice to give my younger self or anyone else early on in their career – it would be, be confident! Don’t doubt your abilities or be scared to use your initiative.”
Outside of work
Liz has a number of different interests outside of work and if she wasn’t working in Administration, she’d be working in television as a camera operator!The wider team are a sociable bunch, so evenings socialising together are common – something that Liz very much enjoys about being in the office, as opposed to working from home.
Outside of work, Liz enjoys TV, travelling and visiting National Trust properties, as well as good food and good wine.
