Meet The Team: Megan

The next subject for our series of blog posts introducing you to team at Mathisen & Macara, is Megan Garraghan – Patent and Trademark Paralegal.

Biography

Megan has been part of the team at Mathisen & Macara since January 2019, during which time she’s held a range of responsibilities related to formalities, across the business.

Spurred on to work for Mathisen & Macara by her keen interest in Intellectual Property Law, Megan is now Patent and Trademark Paralegal at the firm, handling all our Trade Mark formalities on a day-to-day basis.

Here’s a little more information about Megan, and how she’s come to this stage of her career.

Focusing on qualifications

In a short space of time, Megan has dedicated herself to achieving a range of qualifications across the spectrum of IP.

Training in Patents Formalities and handling all the European Grant Formalities when she first joined us in 2019, Megan completed her first course with the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys in September 2019 and went on to begin learning about Trade Mark formalities to gain knowledge across the spectrum of Intellectual Property law.

In 2020 Megan passed her Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys’ paralegal exam with a merit – which is no mean feat. Given the nature of the industry, qualifications and continued learning are vitally important in staying up to date with changing legislation and processes. As a CITMA Paralegal member, Megan continues to expand her knowledge within Trade Mark law – an activity which brings her continued satisfaction.

Attention to detail

“The part of my job I enjoy most is taking on projects that require a lot of attention to detail; things that I can really focus on and get stuck into.”

Working with Formalities at Mathisen & Macara brings ample opportunities for detail-oriented work. Formalities within IP law are numerous – ranging from European Grant formalities to Trade Mark formalities – and a keen eye for detail and accuracy is key to success.

In contrast to the detailed work of formalities, if she didn’t have her current career, Megan’s ideal job would be to own a family-run bridal boutique!

Pursuits outside of work

Megan’s diligence when it comes to performance, doesn’t just stand within her professional life. Outside of work, Megan is focussed on keeping fit, with regular training sessions at the gym, swimming, and spin classes. When not at the gym, she has a keen interest in interior design and decorating at home.

Past, present, and future

When asked what advice she would give her younger self, with the experience she’s had so far, Megan answered:

“I would tell my younger self to be confident in my own ability and not to doubt myself. I’d also advise her to always ask questions when unsure.”

Now, with almost four years of experience in Intellectual Property, Megan now continues to expand her knowledge whilst carrying out her role as Patent and Trademark Paralegal within Mathisen & Macara and is now working towards her second Trade Mark exam with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
