Working with you

We adapt the way we work to satisfy our clients’ specific requirements. We have particular experience in operating as if we are a client’s in-house patent department. Many of our attorneys have worked in internal patent departments of major companies, enabling us to understand the client's perspective and form a strong rapport with both technical innovators and commercial managers.

Unlike many of the more traditionally run firms, nearly all our technical work is performed by experienced attorneys at partner level - rather than by more junior employees. Our flexible approach, modern work practices and location just outside central London enable us to provide greater value services to our clients while producing work to the highest standards.

For clients with their own IP department, we can provide significant assistance with the formality side of administering an IP portfolio.

What we offer

We are experts at navigating the application procedures for patents, registered designs, and trademarks, and at maximising the scope of protection that you obtain. We are also highly experienced at giving commercially focused advice on all aspects of these types of intellectual property (IP). Our patenting inventions, registered designs and registered trademarks pages give more details of what we offer.

We can help you avoid IP disputes and advise on enforcing your rights against others. We have a wealth of experience in defending our clients’ patents in opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office and in opposing patents belonging to their competitors. See our IP disputes page for further details.

Our commercial initiatives page gives details of how we can assist with IP due diligence aspects of your commercial initiatives.

We provide a reliable and competitive worldwide renewal fee payment service, as well as outsourced formalities services, which we can tailor to meet your requirements.

Technologies

We have expertise in a wide range of technologies, enabling us to deal with inventions in chemistry, materials, electronics, communication and information technology, computer-based inventions, bioscience, mechanical and electrical engineering, and other technologies.

Collectively, our attorneys have advanced academic qualifications, including PhDs and MScs, and practical experience in chemistry, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, physical chemistry and biochemistry. Some of our attorneys have worked as researchers and have themselves made patented inventions, giving them a hands-on, pragmatic and curiosity-driven approach to helping clients identify and protect commercially important inventions.

About us

Our business goes back to 1932 when Anders Mathisen set up a firm of Patent Agents in London. In 2011, after having traded for many years as Mathisen, Macara & Co., we converted to the current limited liability partnership, Mathisen & Macara. Later in 2011, we merged with Compass Patents LLP, incorporating their considerable chemical expertise and their efficient and competitive IP renewal service.

Our clients are diverse, including FTSE-100 and global corporations based in the U.K. and abroad, as well as small and medium size businesses, successful entrepreneurs and top universities. We also act as agents for respected foreign attorney firms.

Our location in Greater London, close to Heathrow airport, combines the advantages of a central location without the cost of a London office.

Mathisen & Macara LLP is regulated by the Intellectual Property Regulation Board (IPReg). The professionally qualified members of the firm are UK Registered Patent Attorneys and European Patent Attorneys.
