Dr. Mike Capaldi
UK and European Patent Attorney
I graduated with a first degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Nottingham., Following two years of post-doctoral research in Materials Science, also at Nottingham, and two years working as a Senior Scientific Officer with the UK Ministry of Defence, I made the decision to move into Intellectual Property Law. I qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney in 2003, becoming a principal in-house patent counsel for a large corporation within the UK Chemical Industry. I joined Mathisen & Macara in 2023 bringing over twenty years of patent experience to my role at the firm, experience which, thanks to the industry I work in, is truly international.
My practice encompasses a broad range of chemical subject matter, including plastics, plastics re-cycling, polymers and catalysts. I have also worked in the fields of ceramics and glasses, precious metal refining, battery technology and additives for the fuels and lubricants industries.
As a Patent Attorney, my specialisms include:
The preparation, filing and prosecution of patent applications in the UK and in Europe.
Advising clients on matters of patent infringement and validity and undertaking freedom-to-operate studies
All practice associated with the European Patent Office, with a particular focus on representing clients at Opposition and Appeal Proceedings.
Working with international counsel to prosecute and defend Patents in countries around the world including the USA, China, Japan, and South Korea.
An eternal pragmatist, I aim to use my experience and knowledge to help my clients to navigate the IP landscape, providing practical advice aimed at maximising the value of their intellectual property.
